Life: post epic sunset
Nosara may be a sleepy beach town by day, but you don’t have to go far to dance to live music with a cuba libre or dine cliffside for a romantic date. Playa Guiones is more of an early awake, therefore, most restaurants in Guiones Beach are closed by 10pm.

Their Eco Story

Olas Verdes is a Costa Rican boutique hotel in Playa Guiones, Nosara and it is the first LEED Platinum hotel in Costa Rica. There are 17 suites across five, two-story buildings, each representing a different region of Costa Rica featuring distinct color palettes and authentic decor from local artisans in their respective province. The hotel also partnered with the Nosara Recycling Center to collect specific types of glass bottles over several months for different colors in the upcycled countertops and two mosaics made by local artists.

Appointing 22 native Costa Rican staff in all levels of management was an important factor to Olas Verdes’ founders, who started the project because of their love for Costa Rica’s people and culture. Their dedication to preserving the fragile ecosystems that make the rural beach town so unique is why Olas Verdes strived for LEED standards from day one—hoping to catalyze the inception of LEED projects in the region.

Water conservation was of the utmost priority for the owners since Nosara is in a five-year drought, which is why Olas Verdes installed 14,000 liters of underground rainwater storage. Each “Casita” uses ultra low-flow water fixtures and all of the property’s greywater is treated in a chemical-free wastewater treatment system. The water is then recycled for irrigating all of the native vegetation that was diligently sourced for six months before installation. As a result, the property seamlessly blends with the neighboring Ostional Wildlife Refuge and provides additional habitat for various fauna who frequent the hotel grounds.

A combination of rooftop solar panels, solar hot water systems, and battery storage meet over 30 percent of the hotel’s annual energy demand with renewable energy, which not only powers the hotel’s amenities, but the locally owned restaurant and surf school on the property benefit from the clean energy as well.

The saltwater pool is shaped like two breaking waves not only as an ode to the hotel’s name, “Green Waves”, but also to navigate around the large Jobo trees that would have been removed otherwise. All of the roofing and overhangs were custom trimmed and positioned to go around the trees on the property while tree aeration wells allowed for the buildings’ footprints to sit close to the trees without suffocating their root systems. These initiatives altogether saved over 90 percent of the existing trees on the property.
