Nestled in the foothills of the Serra da Estrela Mountain Range of Central Portugal, Cara Creek Eco Lodge is situated directly on the banks of the River Seia where it meets the River Mondego. It is completely off grid - maintaining a minimal carbon footprint.
Their unique accommodations and natural facilities are all inspired-by-nature in design, and with respect to nature in construction. Accommodations include 5 "Penta-Pods", glamping "eco-pods" with 5 sides built from a wooden frame and canvas walls and roof. They are simply perfect and have a private deck with beautiful views and a top quality mattress for a naturally fabulous nights sleep.
Cara Creek Eco Lodge offers some exceptional facilities. Their natural swimming pool is kept clear and chemical-free with plant filtration and a UV and sand filter. The outdoor gym is covered from rainfall and stays cool even on a summer afternoon for a workout of your choice any time. Their river front yoga deck is an idyllic spot for a morning or evening practice. Mountain bikes and Paddle Boards are available to use as well. The facilities that nature provides are also pretty exceptional.
Right on-site, the River Seia has a swimming creek with a rock jump and a private river beach for a splash about. With the River Mondego a few minutes down a path, paddle boarding is a favourite afternoon past time of our guests. For those craving a more strenuous activity, right on their doorstep are trails for hiking or biking. Their 4 dogs and 2 cats are an important part of their family at Cara Creek Eco Lodge, and they love to show our guests the local trails, and swim alongside them as they stand up paddle board.
During their all-inclusive retreats, you can be sure that you will be well fed - wholesome and plant-based, and as local and organic as possible. They have a garden as well as a small farm of pigs, goats, and chickens. There is a large community of people growing and raising their own, so when we cannot provide from our own garden and farm, we do not have to look far to provide the most local and fresh ingredients for our kitchen.
Just 10 minutes from Cara Creek Eco Lodge is the quaint village of Ervedal da Beira which maintains a rich Portuguese culture and community. Relax and enjoy a coffee there, or inquire with The Beiras Tour Co. to arrange a cultural tour or excursion of your choice.
You can explore their site to find information about upcoming retreats, courses, and yoga teacher training. B

Lily and Lola
We also have 4 lovely dogs and 2 friendly cats as on-site pets. They are all friendly and polite with our guests, and if welcome they love to join for a stroll along the river Mondego.
If you are interested in a work exchange opportunity, there's an opportunity to learn about natural building, about living more sustainably and off-grid, what it takes to run a retreat center, gardening, cooking, looking after the farm animals and pets, and more. They will provide tent accommodation and food 7 days per week in exchange for 25 hours of work per week.
Their Eco Story
Family owned and operated, since 2017. Cara Creek was built from the ground up from natural building materials only and maintain a minimal carbon footprint now by being completely off-grid. Rory has done the building, and Ashley is the on-site yoga instructor and retreat facilitator.
Cara Creek Eco Lodge has been constructed with respect for nature, and therefore complements the natural beauty of the property. They continue to optimize the beautiful piece of paradise to its potential with permaculture principles in mind, and have built and renovated using sustainable architecture techniques and with only natural building materials.
The stone ruins were preserved and renovated using the traditional methods of repointing with limecrete - a mixture of water, sand and lime. For new structures, natural building materials like timber (some from the land!), cob, and stone were used. The naturally occurring element of Borax preserves the wood, and linseed oil polished and finished it. From the stone foundations, to finishing the touches of paint, they have a minimal carbon footprint by using natural and locally sourced materials.
Cara Creek Eco Lodge maintains a low carbon footprint by being completely off grid. Their lodge uses fire wood sourced from their land in their wood oven for cooking and to heat water for showers, and the wood fired hot tub. Electricity is powered by solar, and they're fortunate to have our own mountain spring for drinking water.
Their natural swimming pool remains chemical free by using plants, as well as a UV and sand filter to keep the water clear.
In both their garden and overall project, they have implemented permaculture principles. Their pigs and chickens have turned over their soil for their kitchen garden, and provide compost. They grow lots of their own fruit and veggies, raise chickens for fresh eggs and poultry, raise pigs for pork, and raise goats for milk and cheese. They use most of their own grown and raised produce in their kitchen and if they do not grow it or raise it themselves, they get it from the most local and organic source as possible. Their intention is to be fully self-sustainable.
